Power Supply Wiring in the Car
Tracktuned Link runs strictly on 5V DC. Connecting 12V vehicle battery voltage directly to the Micro USB port will instantly destroy the device.
Option A: ECU 5V Sensor Supply (Recommended)
Most aftermarket standalone ECUs (Haltech, MaxxECU, Link, MoTeC) provide regulated 5V sensor power (VCC / 5V_OUT) capable of supplying up to 500mA:
- Connect the Micro USB +5V wire (Red) to the ECU 5V sensor output.
- Connect the Micro USB Ground wire (Black) to the ECU sensor ground (0V).
- Advantage: The Link automatically turns on and off cleanly with vehicle ignition.
Option B: 12V-to-5V Step-Down Converter
If you do not want to tap the ECU sensor rail, use a dedicated 12V-to-5V 3A automotive buck converter:
- Wire the 12V positive input of the buck converter to a switched ignition source (e.g. cigarette lighter or ignition terminal 15) with an inline 1A fuse.
- Wire the 12V ground input to a clean chassis ground.
- Plug the 5V USB output directly into the Link.
Always use a switched ignition source: Avoid wiring the power supply to constant +12V battery power (terminal 30). While the device only draws 1W, leaving it continuously powered will slowly drain the vehicle battery over weeks of storage.
Mounting & Thermal Guidelines
- Location: Mount the device under the dashboard, center console, or glovebox within reach of the ECU USB cable.
- Fastening: Heavy-duty 3M Dual-Lock velcro or zip ties through the enclosure mounting ears.
- Thermal clearances: Operating temperature range is -20°C to +70°C. Keep at least 30cm away from exhaust headers, turbo downpipes, and heater cores.
- RF line of sight: Avoid enclosing the device inside a fully sealed metal box, which creates a Faraday cage and degrades WiFi range. High-grade plastic or carbon fiber enclosures provide excellent RF transparency.
